Safety on Hiking Trails

📱 Emergency contact: Mountain Rescue Service 18300 or 112. Before trip download Záchranka app with precise GPS location. Inform someone about your plan and expected return time.
🗺️ Orientation: Carry a hiking map (both paper and digital). Follow marking, photograph junctions in case of return. In fog or snow orientation is more difficult.
⏰ Time plan: Count with time for descent (often as long as ascent). Return in time to be down before dark. In bad weather turn back early.
🎒 Equipment: Solid hiking boots with profiled sole, layered clothing, windbreaker, rain gear, sufficient liquids (min. 2 l), food, first aid kit, flashlight, map, mobile phone with powerbank.
🐻 Fauna: Bears live in the Tatras. Make noise while walking, don't enter dense vegetation. When meeting a bear slowly back away, don't run. Don't give it food.
⛈️ Weather: In mountains weather changes quickly. Watch forecast, during storm immediately descend from exposed places. Temperature drops with altitude (approximately 0.6°C per 100 m).
